Arena House
Located on the sand in front of the sea at Santa Teresa Beach, Costa Rica, this beach house is surrounded by tropical vegetation, including local palm trees and other trees that provide the necessary shade to create a fresh and comfortable space suited to the region’s high temperatures.
The project is a two-story beach house with a strong emphasis on outdoor living. It features a double-height social area seamlessly connected to the kitchen, as well as a deck and a pool with ocean views, ensuring a complete beachside experience. The bedrooms on the second floor are designed to integrate with the surrounding nature, while the master bedroom includes an en-suite bathroom with an internal garden.
White wood and palm elements on the main facade highlight the tropical character of the project, enhancing its aesthetics to reflect sophistication and the best qualities of tropical architecture. Additional details in wood and cane serve as subtle design accents, reinforcing the house’s architectural language.
Costa Rica’s tropical climate, shaped by its geographical location, requires a balance between traditional and contemporary design to ensure sustainability over time. Wood, used as a structural element in a beachfront setting, offers greater durability and easier maintenance compared to materials like steel. The sloped roof allows for proper rain drainage while featuring a palm finish that further accentuates the tropical aesthetic of the house.
Openings throughout the house maximize natural ventilation from the ocean, particularly in the afternoons. Preserving the existing vegetation around the perimeter helps regulate wind speed, preventing strong gusts that could disrupt daily activities.
