KOOK’S Smokehouse & Market
Strategically located in Santa Teresa beach, KOOK’S Smokehouse & Market stands out as a distinctive architectural project, where a refined industrial design language merges organically with the lush surrounding tropical nature. The spatial concept is based on an open and permeable structure that blurs conventional boundaries between indoors and outdoors, creating an immersive experience within the Costa Rican environment. The material palette—dominated by the strength of dark metal and the tactile warmth of natural wood—establishes a contemporary and robust aesthetic that simultaneously evokes a sense of rootedness and authenticity.
The project’s volumetry is defined by clean lines and a structure that intentionally exposes elements such as beams and metal supports, imparting a strong industrial character. These components, far from being purely functional, are integrated as essential parts of the design, contributing to the visual identity of the space. Expansive glass enclosures play a crucial role in maximizing the entry of natural light, flooding the interiors and establishing a constant visual connection with the surrounding landscape. This strategic transparency not only enhances illumination but also allows the tropical vegetation to serve as a dynamic and ever-changing backdrop.
The transition between interior and exterior spaces is articulated through carefully designed semi-covered areas and terraces. These transitional zones act as natural extensions of the building, providing living spaces where the project’s materiality blends seamlessly with the richness of the local flora. The choice of flooring, furniture, and landscaping elements aligns with the primary material palette, aiming for an aesthetic continuity that reinforces the sense of unity.
At KOOK’S, architecture seeks not only to create a functional space but also to craft an atmosphere that celebrates the beauty of raw materials and the exuberance of Santa Teresa’s tropical setting. The result is an environment that balances industrial solidity with the lightness of the tropics, offering a unique spatial experience that invites contemplation and enjoyment of the surroundings. The design intent is rooted in establishing a constant dialogue between the built environment and nature, creating a space that feels both modern and deeply connected to its context.
